GE to Supply Turbine-Generator for New 235-Megawatt Hydropower Plant in Norway

OSLO, NORWAY (October 6, 2004) — Sunnhordland Kraftlag AS has selected GE Energy to supply the hydro turbine and generator for the Blaafalli Vik hydropower station being built on the west coast of Norway, about 110 kilometers southeast of Bergen. The new facility will replace two old power plants, Blaafalli 1 and Blaafalli 2, which both will be stopped and de-commissioned when the new Blaafalli Vik is commissioned.

Under a contract of approximately US$16 million, GE Energy will provide a 235-megawatt, 365.5-meter head vertical Francis hydro turbine and one vertical, synchronous generator with an excitation system.

"This project marks an important milestone for GE," said Tracy Moore, GE Energy's General Manager for Hydro. "This will be the first GE delivery of a hydro turbine-generator of this size in Europe since our acquisition of Kvaerner." GE Energy acquired the hydroelectric turbine business of the Kvaerner Group, a leading Nordic manufacturer, in 1999.

In addition to the turbine and generator, the GE contract also includes mechanical balance-of-plant equipment, design and engineering, spare parts, transportation, training, installation and commissioning.

The equipment will be built in collaboration between GE manufacturing facilities and subcontractors. The first major part, the draft tube, will be shipped in January of 2005 and the last major part, the generator rotor, will be shipped in November of 2005. The new facility is scheduled to begin commercial operation in September of 2006.

Sunnhordland Kraftlag AS (www.sunnhordland-kraftlag.no), based in Stord, Norway, is a wholesale hydropower electricity producer with an average annual production of 1.5 terawatt-hours. The power is transmitted to several distribution companies that sell the power to consumers.
