GE Bringing Latest Technology, Global Experience into Asia's Growing Wind Energy Industry BEIJING, CHINA (November 1, 2004) — Highlighting its strong commitment to provide its global customers with cleaner and greener energy solutions, GE Energy is displaying its wide range of wind turbine technology, services and experience at World Wind Energy Conference 2004. "Over recent years, strong governmental goals to increase the use of renewable energy and decrease carbon emissions have spurred wind energy growth projections globally, including within the Asian countries," said Steve Zwolinski, CEO of GE Energy's wind operations. "With Asia's vast area and abundant wind energy resource, wind can provide a significant contribution to Asia's electricity mix in future years. GE Energy is pleased to be a part of this growth, and is supporting its customers through dedicated wind energy office locations in China, Japan, India, Korea, Taiwan and Australia. Huang Yicheng, president of the China Energy Research Association, noted at the recent China Wind Power Summit that China alone has a potential wind power capacity of 25.3 billion kilowatts, (250GW on-shore, 750GW offshore) the largest in the world. At the start of 2004, the country's installed wind power capacity was 566 megawatts, third in Asia behind India's 2,120 megawatts and Japan's 644 megawatts. GE Energy's 1.5-megawatt wind turbine technology is well-established in Asia, with 166 (75 in Japan, 47 in China, 18 in India and 26 in Taiwan) of these machines installed or committed for projects in the region, totaling 249 megawatts of new wind power capacity. GE's 1.5-megawatt wind turbines are among the most widely sold megawatt-class wind turbines in the world, with more than 2,500 global installations. GE recently announced that 14 of its 1.5-megawatt wind turbines will be supplied for the first two utility-scale wind projects to be built in Shanghai, China's largest city. (For details on the Shanghai projects, please see the related news release in this press kit.) Other Asian projects which utilize GE's wind turbine technology include:
