42 Wind Turbines From GE Energy To Power Five Wind Projects in Italy

LONDON, ENGLAND. (November 22, 2004) — GE Energy will supply 42 of its 1.5-megawatt wind turbines for five wind projects in southern Italy that will add 63 megawatts of wind-generated electricity for the Italian power grid.

The wind turbines will be installed for projects owned by four separate companies. All of the projects are in Troia, which is located 180 kilometers northeast of Naples and is one of the windiest areas of Italy.

The projects include:
• Troia 1, owned by Vento Energia, which is part of Energetic Source SpA, one of the first private electricity and gas traders in Italy; five wind turbines, total capacity of 7.5 megawatts.

• Troia 2, owned by Bergamo Energia, an energy utility in the Province of Bergamo; ten wind turbines, total capacity of 15 megawatts.

• Troia 3A, owned by Sistemi Energetici, seven wind turbines, total capacity of 10.5 megawatts.

• Troia 3B, owned by Sistemi Energetici, five wind turbines, total capacity of 7.5 megawatts.

• Troia 4, owned by Eolo Puglia, 15 wind turbines, total capacity of 22.5 megawatts.

Located in the Puglia Region in the Foggia Province of central-southern Italy, the five Troia wind projects are all being developed by Sistemi Energetici. In addition to supplying and installing the wind turbines, GE Energy will perform operation and maintenance services for five years. All five projects are expected to be completed by the beginning of 2006.

The Troia wind projects benefit from the Italian government’s on-going support of projects in lesser-developed areas in southern Italy. Overall, the government is supporting the development of renewable energy as part of the country’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol and the EU goal of producing 22 percent of Europe’s electricity from renewable energy sources by 2010. Much of that power is expected to come from wind energy.

According to a recent survey published by the German Wind Energy Institute, Italy is one of five highly important future markets for wind energy development. By the end of 2003, the country had 922 megawatts of installed wind energy capacity, with a target of more than 2,400 megawatts by the end of 2008.

GE Energy has a well-established service network in Italy that will provide service support for GE-installed wind turbine projects. This service organization supports several GE business units in the country including GE Energy’s oil and gas group, which has its global headquarters in Florence.

Currently, GE operates 37 companies in Italy, employing 6,700 people, and is active in many of the country’s strategic industries including energy, medical equipment, transportation and financial services. GE’s Florence training center is the largest GE customer-training center in Europe.
