GE Energy's TM2500 Rental Units to Help Meet Summer Peak Demand in Western Australia

ORLANDO, FLORIDA (November 30, 2004) — GE Energy is providing 80 megawatts of extra capacity to Western Power Corporation (WPC) of Perth, Australia to help meet the higher electricity demand of customers in Western Australia during the summer season.

Four GE TM2500™ gas turbines arrived in Australia in mid-November and will be used from December 1, 2004 to March 31, 2005, which are peak electricity demand months in the region. The rental units will be located at WPC's Pinjar Gas Turbine Station. The scope of GE's contract with WPC includes transportation of the units to the site, assembly, commissioning, operation and disassembly.

A trailer-mounted version of GE's well-proven LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine, the TM2500 is a portable power plant that was introduced by GE's energy rentals division in 1999. It can be easily transported by ship, rail or truck and can be quickly installed on site. Each TM2500 is capable of producing more than 20 megawatts of power.

Because the capacity of the main gas pipeline into the region has not been increased for several years, there is concern that there could be restrictions on gas supplies to gas turbines during the summer's peak load periods. The flexibility of the TM2500s to run on distillate was a key factor in WPC's decision to rent these units.

"Using the TM2500s is just one of the steps WPC has taken to minimize the risk of any electricity supply interruptions this summer," said Ricardo Artigas, president of energy services for GE Energy. "They also are upgrading outputs from their dual coal/oil-fired units and are applying fogging systems to their distillate-fired gas turbines as ways of meeting customer needs during periods of restrictions in gas supplies. We are pleased that our technology has been selected as part of WPC's overall effort to maintain a reliable flow of electricity to customers throughout the hot summer months."

WPC is Western Australia's leading electricity corporation, serving 794,000 industrial, commercial and residential customers. The company owns approximately 60% of electricity generation capacity in Western Australia, with the remainder owned by private industry.

GE formed its energy rentals business to offer rental equipment for temporary distributed power and climate control applications in the commercial, industrial, utility, oil and gas and special events industries. In addition to the TM2500, the business has a broad portfolio of rental products including natural gas-fired engines, diesel generators ranging from five kilowatts to 1.9 megawatts, air conditioners as large as 50 tons and water-cooled chillers up to 1,000 tons.
