Repair, Maintenance and Calibration

Performing Service at Every Level Specialized

GE provides a full range of repair, maintenance, and calibration services to ensure that directional drilling and formation evaluation systems and components operate at their full capability, reliability and availability. The services are segmented into four levels according to the knowledge, equipment and resources necessary to perform them. The customer performs field and shop level maintenance while factory level maintenance is available for situations that require specialized equipment and knowledge. Training is available to help you develop and maintain the internal capability to perform the necessary levels of service.

The Four Levels

Level 1: Rig Site

This is the basic level that all users must be capable of to run MWD or resistivity jobs in the field. Included in this level are routine preventative, operability tests and basic trouble shooting including:

  • Pre- and post-run tests
  • Routine pulser, battery, interconnect and directional module inspection and maintenance
  • Routine inspection, replacement and maintenance on surface systems, cables and sensors
  • Gamma performance validation
  • Resistivity checks:
    • — Confirming communication
    • — Air hangs confirm minimal drift during the run
    • — Evaluation of memory data
    • — Inspection of wear areas
    • — Re-torque or replacement of bolts, o-rings, seals and other field expendable parts

No repairs or major component replacements will typically be made in this level. When significant issues are found, the components are sent to a Level 2, Basic Shop (or higher) for further evaluation. Customer personnel typically perform level 1 after completing GE training.

Level 2: Basic Shop - Repair and Maintenance (MWD and Gamma Only)

This level will typically be performed at the customer's shop. This level includes routine preventative maintenance, testing to identify root causes of failed systems/components and repairs that would not result in the need to recalibrate the system. Level 2 activities include:

  • System assembly and disassembly
  • Testing and standard maintenance of downhole components including replacement of o-rings, elastomers and other wear parts
  • Testing and standard maintenance of surface components
  • Communications testing between system components
  • Module and system verification testing and checks
  • Roll tests of directional modules

Issues that cannot be identified or remedied in a Level 2 are sent to a Level 3, Advanced Shop. Level 2 is typically performed by customer personnel after completing GE training.

Level 3: Advanced Shop - Repair and Maintenance (Formation Evaluation Only)

Level 3 is an extension of Level 2 that includes all but the most difficult FORMATION EVALUATION repairs or factory calibrations. This level typically takes a significant investment in test equipment and resources. Level 3 activities include:

  • Electronics problem diagnosis and replacement determination
  • Repair and/or replacement of wiring and connectors
  • Wear band replacement on collar mounted components
  • Air hangs
  • Collar damage repair

Depending on the customer's resource allocation, either GE or the customer can perform level 3.

Level 4: Factory - Repair and Calibration

Level 4 can address all repairs and calibrations. The GE facilities have special equipment to diagnose and evaluate significant repair issues. The facilities are also fully capable of performing calibrations on all modules. Level 4 is performed exclusively at GE facilities.
