Gamma Module

Gamma Detectors

Accurate Gamma Detection

Detecting natural gamma ray radiation downhole while drilling is critical so that geologists can establish and verify formation "markers," or boundaries between classes of formations, in the first well drilled in a reservoir and in subsequent wells drilled in the same reservoir. GE's gamma module is a high efficiency natural gamma detector designed for use with wireline and Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tools in boreholes.

Features and Benefits

With its patented design and rigorous qualification testing, our gamma module is one of the most reliable tools on the market. Every module is 100 percent vibration tested prior to delivery. The sensor creates a new level of reliability by operating in temperatures ranging from -4 to 347 °F (-20 to 175 °C).

  • Ensures greater stability
    - Our patented flexible dynamic sleeve surrounds and protects both the module's scintillation and overall assemblies, absorbing external shock and vibration while maintaining concentric position within the pressure housing. This ensures that the gamma sensor is as accurate and stable as possible.
  • Minimizes vibration
    - Our proprietary photomultiplier tube (PMT) suspension system uses radial springs to support the PMT and greatly minimize the transfer of vibrational energy to the PMT.
  • Enhances sensitivity
    - Our innovative packaging technology permits the use of a larger crystal within the same geometric envelope, improving sensitivity by approximately 20 percent. Sapphire windows are used instead of the typical glass windows, providing for a much stronger material with better transmission properties.
  • Heightens performance
    - A titanium housing allows for the use of a thinner wall. Both the titanium material and thin wall promises lower gamma attenuation, increasing performance.
  • Boosts power
    - Amplifiers, discriminators and high voltage power supplies can be packaged with the detector to provide optimum electrical performance while consuming minimal space.
