FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems)

100 MW Variable Frequency Transformer (VFT) Installation at Hydro-Quebec Langlois Substation

GE has developed non power electronic based FACTS solutions that offer utilities the ability to enhance controllability, stability, and increase the power transfer capability of AC transmission systems. In recent years, utility operators have become more interested in solving their transmission system concerns and issues without the use of power electronic based solutions, instead opting in favor for more traditional electric mechanical solutions that are both grid friendly and reliable.

GE offers the following systems to help grid operators solve their grid issues:

Series Compensation
A cost effective system that increases the dynamic stability of the transmission grid, reducing voltage variation and balancing load between parallel transmission paths.

Synchronous Condensers
Robust voltage support system with reliable output and better ride-through than equivalent power electronic-based systems.

VFT
A bi-directional transmission device with continuous controllability, which transfers power between two grids while providing network stability and system reliability.
