The 6FA gas turbine is well suited for both base load and cyclic duty in a variety of configurations, including combined cycle, district heating, and industrial/oil and gas cogeneration.

• Combined Cycle is when the gas turbine generator produces electricity and captures the waste heat to make  steam to generate additional electricity via a steam turbine.
• District Heating is a system for distributing heat from a centralized location for residential and commercial heating/hot water requirements. District heating plants based on gas turbines can provide higher efficiencies and better pollution control than localized boilers.
• Industrial Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electricity and process steam from a common fuel source. Excess steam can be used to power a steam turbine.

Easily adaptable for both 50 and 60 Hz markets, the 6FA gas turbine is used globally and in all climates. Since its introduction in 1995, GE has shipped more than 110 6FA gas turbines which have accumulated more than 3.5 million fired hours.

The 6FA heavy duty gas turbine is aerodynamically scaled from the 7FA and 9FA gas turbines using advanced aircraft engine technology in its design.

• The turbine section is an air-cooled design with three nozzle stages. Integral tip shrouds are incorporated on the second and third stages to reduce bucket fatigue and improve heat rate.
• The eighteen-stage, axial flow compressor is designed with an ISO base pressure ratio of 15.8:1 and airflow of 203 kg/second. High strength, corrosion-resistant stainless steel airfoil material is used on the first eight stages, with the remaining airfoils made  of steel alloy.
• Advanced combustion system - GE's reverse flow, six-chamber, second generation Dry Low NOx (DLN) 2.6 combustion system or multi-nozzle quiet combustor with six fuel nozzles per chamber is standard on the 6FA gas turbine.

GE Energy's Quality Management System is designed to satisfy ISO 9001:2000 requirements. In particular:

• Rotor balancing and full-speed no-load test of the 6FA gas turbine is usually performed in the factory before shipment.
• Test software is validated on the 6FA gas turbine control cubicles before shipment.
• Overspeed test and full-load rejection tests are done onsite.
• Performance, noise, and emission measurements are also performed in situ on the 6FA gas turbine.

The 6FA gas turbine is customizable in the following configurations:

• Combustion system - DLN for natural gas and light distillate 2 (LD2) or multi-nozzle quiet combustor (MNQC) for synthetic gas or continuous LD2 operation
